Users react as Spotify crashes with widespread outage

Spotify users have hit out after the streaming service was hit by widespread technical issues.

More than 40,000 users have logged complaints so far on Downdetector, which tracks problems with platforms, indicating they were having issues with the Spotify app and website, according to Variety.

The outage has affected users in multiple countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Sweden and Germany.

The official Spotify Status account on X indicated that the company is aware of the problems.

“We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible. The reports of this being a security hack are false,” the update added.

Some Spotify users who tried to access the site saw a 502 HTTP error message that said: “Server Error. The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.”

Others encountered a 504 HTTP error that said: “This page isn’t working. open.spotify.com took too long to respond,” as well as one that said “upstream request timeout.” In the Spotify app for both mobile and desktop, the search function was not working and attempts to play back music and podcasts were unsuccessful.

Many users took to X to express their frustration. “Spotify down omggggg I can’t do this,” one wrote, while another added: “Spotify is down and I’m still at work.”

Others posted a host of jokey memes. You can view their reactions below:

Following the outage, Spotify have since posted a new update saying: “All clear – thanks for your patience. Get in touch with @SpotifyCares if you still need help.”

Meanwhile, the streamer recently claimed it had paid out $10bn (£7.7bn) in royalties in 2024, the largest payout to the music industry in a single year.

The streaming service said 1,500 artists earned over $1million (£755,295) in royalties, marking a 10-fold increase in its yearly payout figure from 2024, where $1billion (£755.2million) was given overall.
