Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley is recovering at home following a health scare that left him hospitalized with pneumonia and potential heart failure over the weekend. On Sunday, the singer’s wife Ariana Cooper Whibley shared an update on his condition, writing: “The pressure and strain on his heart and lungs has improved and he is able to breath without as much pain.”
The initial report of Whibley’s hospitalization arrived from Cooper on Friday, who revealed that the medical emergency overlapped with their eighth wedding anniversary plans. “We spent the entire night in the ER and will now be spending the next few days here in the hospital as he fights through pneumonia,” she shared. “The scariest part is that there is a lot of strain on his heart and they are telling us that there is a possibility of heart failure. This is obviously not our first time in a situation like this but it brings back a lot of really difficult memories seeing him back in a hospital bed connected to wires and IVs.”

Since being discharged from the hospital, Whibley has been under the care of his wife and mother, who is a registered nurse. The frontman was previously hospitalized in 2014 related to complications with his liver and kidneys as a result of alcohol abuse. “I know how strong he is because I have witnessed what he has been able to overcome but that doesn’t make it any easier to see,” Cooper wrote. “I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated but if you could keep him in your heart over the next few days, we could really use it.”
Sum 41 are currently scheduled to perform at When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas in October. In May, the band announced plans to split after 27 years together. Their final album Heaven x Hell doesn’t have a release date at the moment, but will arrive with one last headlining world tour.
