Miley Cyrus Pressured Into Singing ‘The Climb’ at ‘Something Beautiful’ Premiere By Disgruntled Fans

Some Miley Cyrus fans who paid top dollar to attend the Tribeca Festival debut of the singer’s new visual album, Something Beautiful, appeared to be under the impression that a post-screening Q&A would include a concert. When Cyrus sat down with the film’s co-directors, Brendan Walter and Jacob Bixenman, and producer Pano Cosmatos to discuss the project on Friday night, they were interrupted by hecklers who demanded that she sing a song.

“We thought this was a concert. We paid $800,” yelled one disgruntled attendee in a video posted on X. After initially appearing to ignore the shouts and smiling through the disruption, Cyrus looked confused and asked, “what?,” before turning to face the audience when the woman added, “Are you actually going to sing?” The interruptions continued, with a man yelping, “Miley, sing ‘The Climb!’”

Always happy to make her fans happy, Cyrus acquiesced and began an a cappella version of the song, telling the crowd, “You have to start it,” before giving them the first verse of the 2009 Hannah Montana: The Movie hit. “I can almost see it/ That dream I’m dreaming/ But there’s a voice inside my head saying/ You’ll never reach it,” she sang, gently berating the crowd for “not singing” as she finished the second verse.

Cyrus appeared unfazed by the disruptions in an Instagram pic post from the premiere on Saturday, in which she wrote, “Seeing Something Beautiful on the big screen at @tribeca @beacontheatre surrounded by the screams of the audience, was so worth every bit of effort lovingly labored into this visual album. Tonight was emotional, deep, fun & fabulous. All my favorite things, but YOU the crowd were my absolute favorite of all. I love you.”

The Tribeca site clearly promoted the event as a screening of the 55-minute visual album, followed by “an exclusive conversation with Miley Cyrus,” with no mention of a musical performance. Something Beautiful will open in theaters on Thursday (June 12).
