Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff shows off Stone Roses and New Order records in new vinyl haul

Doug Emhoff, the husband of US Vice President Kamala Harris, has showed off his new vinyl record haul – which includes classic LPs by The Stone Roses and New Order.

Ahead of yesterday’s Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the latter’s husband Doug Emhoff and the Governor of California Gavin Newsom made a surprise visit at the Latchkey record store in Philadelphia.

The pair each bought two LPs, showing off their haul in a video posted to Emhoff’s social media. In the video – which you can see below – Doug said while unveiling the two records he had purchased: “These are two records that I still listen to, to this day.”

The records he pulled out of the bag turned out to be The Stone Roses’ self-titled 1989 debut album and New Order’s ‘Brotherhood’, released in 1986. “Great albums, check them all out,” Emhoff added.

Gavin Newsom, on the other hand, went with more classic records, unveiling Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’ and Jackson Browne’s ‘Hold Out’. “Not bad,” Newsom said of Emhoff’s picks, before adding about his own selection: “There’s only one late, great Miles Davis. And this one costs a little bit more so I could only afford two. But come on, California – Jackson Browne. That’s got California all over it.”

The store’s owner Marc Faletti said in an interview with Salon that Emhoff and Newsom “asked a couple of questions about the shop, but mostly they just wanted to talk about music.” Faletti added that the pair had also spotted a section of the shop named “soft/dad/yacht rock” and had a chat about the bands in the genre.

“We had a great conversation about whether ‘dad rock’ or ‘yacht rock’ are insulting terms for the genre or not,” Marc said. “The consensus is that it’s slightly mystifying to the Gen Xers, but they didn’t seem too frustrated by it… They were just surprised how many artists they like were in that category.”

Emhoff’s appreciation for vinyl echoes that of his wife and US Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who in May showed off her own vinyl haul and shared more about her favourite acts. Included in her haul were records by Charlie Mingus, Roy Ayers, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Earlier this month, New Order announced a deluxe box set reissue of their 1986 studio album ‘Brotherhood’ – the same record picked up by Emhoff. Now, a limited-edition box set — called ‘Brotherhood (Definitive Edition) — will celebrate the seminal album, and is set to be released via Warner Music on November 22.

The reissue includes a vinyl LP of the original album, as well as two CDs — one featuring a re-mastered version of the original album and one containing nine unreleased tracks and demos from a 1985 recording session in Japan. Fans will also have access to two DVDs with TV appearances, including a 1987 performance on Top Of The Pops, and live sets from Brixton Academy in 1987, G-Mex in Manchester in 1986 and Glastonbury in 1987, among others.

The band have also included 12″ singles of hits ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ ‘State of the Nation’ and ‘Touched by the Hand of God’.
