Faye Webster Brings an ‘Anti-Romantic’ Jam Sesh to ‘Jimmy Kimmel’ With ‘But Not Kiss’

Faye Webster wants to move on, but really can’t. On Monday night, the musician visited Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform her intimate track “But Not Kiss,” which she previously described to Rolling Stone as an “anti-romantic” love song.

“I hope you’re okay, but I won’t ask/If you’re in a good place, I won’t mess with that,” the indie star sang, backed by a soft piano and guitar strums. “But I’m here when you need, I always help/Yeah, yeah.”

Webster was introduced by Kathryn Hahn, who’s currently filling in for Jimmy Kimmel as the late-night show’s host.

“But Not Kiss” is one of the standouts from her album Underdressed at the Symphony, which dropped in March. She recalled writing “But Not Kiss,” Undressed‘s first single, in an interview for Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music issue earlier this year: “I remember writing it and being like, ‘I wish this song was written for me. I wish I didn’t have to write it,’ ” she said at the time. “I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I said it myself.”

The album’s peculiar title was inspired by Webster’s own trips to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to help her heal from a breakup. “I found it therapeutic,” she told Rolling Stone. “Nobody knows me, I don’t know anybody. I don’t know what I’m listening to half the time. When I was really going through a hard time, I was like, ‘Oh, is there a show tonight?’ ”

Among the other tracks on Undressed are “Thinking About You,” “Feeling Good Today,” and “Lego Ring” with Lil Yachty. Webster is currently on tour and is scheduled to perform next on July 22 in Richmond, Virginia, before heading to DC, Philly, and Boston. She’ll end her run of shows in Denber in early October.
