The ‘Shape Of You’ star recently replied to an Instagram post by Memezar, which shared a screenshot about him changing his profile photo – a possible hint that Sheeran’s next era could be about to begin (via Pubity).

“Ed Sheeran recently changed his profile picture guys! What math is he gonna do next?” a fan wrote. This referred to the singer-songwriter using mathematical symbols as the names of his first five studio records: ‘+’, ‘x’, ‘÷’, ‘=’ and ‘-‘.

In response, Sheeran wrote: “Irony is if you ask me anything maths related I would fail the question, I never finished high school.” He then signed off by appearing to reveal the title of his next LP. “Play coming soon though,” he added. See below.

Sheeran had previously teased the title in late 2023, when he wrote in a post online: “See you sometime next year when we press Play again on pop, and have a good holiday season x.”

His latest album ‘Autumn Variations’ arrived earlier that year, quickly following on from his previous LP ‘-‘ (‘Subtract’). The latter was said to be the final entry into Sheeran’s long-running mathematical-themed series, until later in his career at least.

“I’m going to make 10 symbol records,” he explained in 2022. “But the next five won’t be maths.”

That same year, Sheeran embarked on his mammoth ‘+–=÷× Tour’ (pronounced the ‘Mathematics Tour’). He is set to play a run of European shows from May to September 2025 before finishing up the year with performances in Bhutan, India, Qatar and Bahrain.

At the end of 2024, Sheeran revealed that he had already finished his next album. “It feels like I’m getting back into big pop for the first time in a long time,” he explained of the LP’s sound.

It was reported at the time that the musician had filmed two new music videos, with two more planned for early 2025. It was said that he was prepping for a “big promo campaign” around the project.

This came after Sheeran said last May that he had made some new material, but was waiting a little longer to share it: “I released two records on tour last year and it’s quite a lot being on tour and releasing records. So, I’ve made the new music and I’m just going to sit on it for a bit.”

Last November, Sheeran released a new festive track called ‘Under The Tree’ from Richard Curtis’ animated Netflix film That Christmas.

In other news, footage recently emerged of police plugging the plug on Sheeran as he performed on a street in Bengaluru, India. Meanwhile, Sheeran last month denied “divisive” reports that he attended J.K. Rowling’s New Year’s party.
