Dinosaur Pile-Up have returned with their first new single in five years, in the form of the visceral ‘’Bout To Lose It’ – listen below.
The Leeds band have announced they have signed with Mascot Records and have shared insight into the huge personal challenges that have faced frontman Matt Bigland in the time the band have been away.
The singer and guitarist has revealed that he was left in critical care in 2021 after a bout of ulcerative colitis, an experience that forced him to re-evaluate his perspective on life, which he has said has been a “cathartic” process.
‘’Bout To Lose It’ is a pulverising release of pent-up frustration, the band returning in full force. “I guess I’m back on the edge / Maybe I never left / Would have been nice if you cared / But what did I expect?”, Bigland sings.

Speaking about overcoming his health scare, Bigland has said: “You think you’re halfway through life, but then you realise you might be right at the end. Being in that room was scary. I felt incredibly vulnerable. I had no control.”
“But hearing people in the final hours of their lives forced me to think about what would happen if I were to die,” he continued. “What was I leaving behind? What really mattered while I was here? What bullshit did I waste my time worrying about? What had true value to me? I’ve always understood that life can be fleeting and fragile – how important it is to take every chance – but I’d never processed it like that…”
“People don’t relate things like health crises with being a dude in a band,” he added. “We’re more associated with rocking out and having a great time – even more so with today’s Instagram culture. At my lowest point, I couldn’t have felt further from being that dude onstage playing to a big crowd. That was difficult to rationalise. I was skin and bones, wrecked, feeling like I was going to die, wondering what had happened to me and why.”
Dinosaur Pile-Up’s last album was ‘Celebrity Mansions’ in 2019, their fourth studio record. It included the single ‘Back Foot’, which came with a comedic video that featured the band taking inspiration from monotonous 9-5 jobs, nagging parents, and dreary daytime TV.
