Carrie Coon Dubs Taylor Swift ‘So Bertha,’ While Praising Singer’s Spot-On Impression of her ‘Gilded Age’ Character

Taylor Swift has made moves both behind and in front of the camera, but according to actress Carrie Coon, the singer might have yet another sideline as a professional impressionist. During an appearance on The Tonight Show on Wednesday (Nov. 4), Coon had the highest of praise for Swift’s impression of her character Bertha Russell from The Gilded Age.

“It’s very good,” Coon said clapping as host Jimmy Fallon played back the clip from Swift’s Oct. 2025 spot on his show in which she playfully made fun of the way she and pal Selena Gomez used to dress as teenagers by slipping into her Bertha impression. Coon said she did not see the bit when it aired, but woke up the next morning to “thousands” of text and Instagram messages about it.

“People were like, ‘Can you believe it?,’ you know. And I have to say it’s very good,” Coon said of Swift’s take on her character. “It’s the right affectation. And she’s so Bertha, she’s such an entrepreneur. Bertha would be like Taylor Swift if she was living today.”

During her appearance last year, Swift was talking about how happy she was for pal Gomez’s marriage to producer Benny Blanco and recalled that she did some “light teasing” at the couple’s wedding about the clothes she and Gomez wore back in the day, delivered, naturally, in the voice of her favorite Gilded Age character.

“It was quite a year, let me tell you,” Swift said in Bertha’s practiced, theatrical mid-Atlantic accent on The Tonight Show. “It was the year of deep, deep v-necks.” The singer said she dropped into her Gilded Age voice because she just loves the show so much. “It was the year of aggressively colorful skinny jeans,” she continued in the accent. “Everyone was walking around saying things were amazeballs. Mrs. Astor hated it.”

When Fallon asked Coon if she thought Swift would ever appear on The Gilded Age, the actress said she thinks she “should,” noting that Swift was “really great” in a Law & Order: SVU bit she appeared in at this year’s Emmy Awards. “I feel like she’d be an excellent nemesis [for Bertha]. Best friend? Maybe best friend. She can help me defeat Enid Winterton.”

To date, Swift has had several screen roles, including a cameo on New Girl, as well as bit parts in 2010’s Valentine’s Day, a voice part in 2012’s The Lorax, a starring role in 2014’s The Giver, a turn at playing flirtatious feline Bombalurina in the bomb big-screen live action version of Cats and an appearance in the 2022 David O. Russell film Amsterdam, among others.
