Taylor Swift is giving fans a peek behind the curtain of her new music video “Patient Zero.”
On Saturday (Oct. 3), the 36-year-old pop superstar took to her Instagram Stories to share a link to the “Patient Zero (Expanded Video)” on Apple Music. The clip takes fans through the making of the music video from start to finish, with Swift breaking down her creative process, directing scenes and sharing funny moments with the video’s stars, Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
“I’ve been wanting to make this video my entire life,” Swift says at the start of the eight-minute clip, describing her love of “sleek” films set in a “monochromatic” world. “You don’t quite understand the world, and you don’t understand what’s wrong with this couple until you do. Meets ghost story, meets true crime, meets a lot of the plot lines I’ve seen on Dateline.”
Directed by Swift, “Patient Zero” — which premiered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27 — follows Johnson as a woman whose health begins to deteriorate while she’s married to Farrell’s character. Swift appears as the ghost of Farrell’s former wife, warning Johnson about her husband and revealing the dark truth behind his past.
Apple Music’s Patient Zero (Video Bundle) features the song, the original music video and an eight-minute behind-the-scenes version of the video.
The exclusive Expanded Video” also finds Johnson discussing what it was like to collaborate with Swift on “Patient Zero.”
“Sometimes when you work with your friends it can really go south, and it will affect your friendship,” the Verity star says. “But she and I work really well together.”
The clip then shows the two friends goofing around on set as they discuss and practice their underwater sequence, in which they wear matching black swimsuits in an outdoor pool overlooking Los Angeles.
The “Patient Zero (Expanded Video)” shows Swift looking very giddy and comfortable behind the camera as she directs Johnson and Farrell. The clip also features the singer giving major props to the music video’s cinematographer, Emmanuel “El Chivo” Lubezki.
“His name is Chivo. They call him that because it means goat, ’cause he’s the f—king goat,” Swift says.
Farrell, who describes his character in the video as successful and ambitious “narcissist” and “psychopath,” also chimes in about Swift’s talents behind the camera.
“The joy she has with her creative engine, which is a really significant creative engine, the joy she has with it is really quite humbling, actually. It’s very moving,” the Fantastic Beasts actor says.
“Patient Zero” is one of four new songs Swift unveiled this week as part of an unexpected release tied to her The Life of a Showgirl album. In addition to “Patient Zero,” The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore features the bonus track “Cleveland!” as well as “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”
