Patrick Wolf is set to celebrate 20 years of ‘The Magic Position’ with a one-off orchestral show in London next year – check out all the details below.
The concert will celebrate the anniversary of his landmark third album, which will be performed in it’s entirety at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, exactly 20 years to the day since the album’s original release on February 26, 2007.
Commenting on the upcoming anniversary show, Wolf said in a press release: “I had been thinking all summer of a way to mark 20 years since the release of an album that completely changed the course of my life.
“With no ability to give the album a remaster or vinyl release, holding no rights to the master recording, and too deep in writing and production for my next album, I decided to give ‘The Magic Position’ one spectacular sonic and visual moment. One night only with chamber orchestra and full band in the venue.
“The album received its grand finale at the end of 2007 – Shepherds Bush Empire. A moment that I hold as much regret for as I do hope for artistic redemption with – my chance for that being, February the 26th, 2027.”
Speaking about the layout of the venue for the show, Wolf told fans on Facebook it would be “split between seated balcony and dancing room stalls”. Tickets to both go on sale this Friday (September 25) at 9am BST here, with his Patreon members able to access a pre-sale from tomorrow (September 23) at 9am BST.
“I look forward to opening the door to this wonderful, beloved world with you next February, in a way I will be able to do with so much greater mastery of my craft and art than I was capable of 20 years ago,” he wrote.
Last year, we caught up with Wolf for a wide-ranging interview touching on his collab with Zola Jesus, tackling “death, decay and loss” on the long-awaited ‘Crying The Neck’, and embracing “outsider status” within the ’00s indie scene.
‘Crying The Neck’ is the first album of a four-part project.
On his complex relationship with “indie sleaze” nostalgia, he said he “never felt like I belonged in any of the music industry”, and wondered if he’d “feel like that for the rest of my life”.
He continued: “I’ve never been on Jools Holland, I’ve never had a Mercury nomination – I don’t get invited to any of these things. I think I can claim outsider status quite authentically!”
“I don’t belong to any particular movement. You’d be very hard pressed to trace me to any of it. All my favourite artists managed to achieve that as well, so I think my teenage self would be proud.
“I feel like an advocate and ambassador for the work. I’m like, ‘Hey, come on! Give me a seat at the table’, but it’s not me. It’s like, ‘Give my work a seat at the table’. But I’m very happy on the margin.”
