Peter Katsis, the renowned music manager who worked with Smashing Pumpkins, Morrissey, Backstreet Boys and more has died.
His passing was confirmed yesterday (Thursday August 6), and is being widely reported as being due to congestive heart failure complications. He was aged 69.
Starting out in the ‘80s, Katsis first turned heads when he took on the industrial rock group Ministry in his Chicago hometown. He would later relocate to Los Angeles in the ‘90s and go on to work with The Cramps and Jane’s Addiction, as well as nu-metal pioneers Limp Bizkit and KoRn.
As his notoriety grew, he began taking on pop and hip-hop artists as well, including Snoop Dogg and Backstreet Boys, as well as 311, Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair and more.
Following news of his death, tributes have quickly rolled in across social media.
Rest in power Pete,” Ministry wrote on Facebook. “He was our first manager in 1981. May your next journey be as prodigious as this one. We (Ministry camp) loved you. Safe travels my friend.”
Morrissey took to his own website to share an image of the music manager alongside the simple caption “Peter Katsis, RIP”, and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan shared his own message on Instagram.
“Heartbroken that Pete is gone,” Corgan wrote, adding that he saw him as “a dear friend and extended member of our family.”
“He will be missed and I’ll always cherish his intense candor and deep love of great music; which was infectious,” he added. “And he deserves immense credit for helping to usher in the alternative revolution of the 80’s and 90’s and beyond. He was truly one of a kind. One of a us. And Chicago royalty through and through.”
DJ and television host Matt Pinfield shared: “Rest in Peace my dear friend. So many memories..you will always be in my heart and thoughts. Thank you for all the incredible times we shared in our brotherhood. From the laughter to the tears, the beauty of living was and Is the ability to feel..Peter Katsis I will miss you so much…my heart remains broken today.”
Podcast host and longtime tech for Jane’s Addiction, Dan Cleary added: “Sad day today. Been working close with Peter Katsis for close to 20 years as he was Jane’s Addiction’s manager as well as some of their adjacent projects. He was a lovely man and always listened to the crew if we had concerns. Super collaborative and a well respected man. RIP Pete.”

Later in his career, Katsis also managed One Direction, and in 2008, he co-founded a management firm called Prospect Park.
