Tom Morello Previews New Solo Album With ‘Anti-Fascist’ Rock Song ‘Date Night’

Tom Morello will release a new album, Everyone Gets Everything They Want, on Sept. 25 via Mom + Pop Music. It features production by Tyler Smyth, Carl Restivo, Zakk Cervini, Dan Carey, and Sam Nelson Harris, and guest appearances from Serj Tankian, Kneecap, and Beartooth, as well as Morello’s son Roman Morello.

The musician previewed the LP with song “Date Night,” which recounts the true story of three young Dutch girls who served as spies, saboteurs, and assassins against the Nazis during World War II. The young women acted as underground assassins, seducing Nazi officers, luring them into the woods and killing them.

“I make anti-racist songs for anti-racists,” Morello said in a statement. “I make anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists. And I make anti-Nazi songs for anti-Nazis. ‘Date Night’ is really a ‘which side are you on?’ song. If any of that offends you, do the math. Oh, and Roman Morello wrote the killer riff in this tune.”

“Date Night” is the second track to be released from Everyone Gets Everything They Want. Morello previously shared “Adjourn It,” which features both Tankian and Roman. The track condemns the rising tide of racism and anti-immigrant bigotry.

Morello recently wrapped a tour with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band and performed at Newport Folk Festival last weekend. He will perform at Louder Than Life in Louisville on Sept. 19.

In addition, Morello announced the Power to the People Festival, which is billed as a “celebration of peace, justice, solidarity, music, and community action.” The one-day event is set for Oct. 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, and will feature performances from Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Public Enemy, Killer Mike, Brittany Howard, Dropkick Murphys, Jack Black, Serj Tankian, Grandson, the Neighborhood Kids, Taylor Momsen, Matt Cameron, the Linda Lindas, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and a DJ set by artist Shepard Fairey.

“The Power to the People festival is about freedom, justice, equality and rock & roll,” Morello said in a statement. “It’s about the power everyday human beings have when they come together through music, art, community, and action. We’re honored to bring this incredible lineup to the DC area for a day that celebrates the spirit of activism, creativity, and hope.”
