Carly Rae Jepsen Pens an Ode to a New Chapter on Latest Song ‘After All’

Carly Rae Jepsen is reveling in her life’s next chapter on “After All,” the second single from her double album Day and Night out Sept. 18.

“After All” will appear on the Day side of her next record and was co-written by Jepsen and Kyle Shearer, and co-produced by Shearer and Nate Cyphert. The glistening song finds Jepsen musing on life as a new wife and mother in a series of tableaus; there’s terracotta tiles, late-night fireworks, and an apartment with the view of the ocean. The chillwave-esque track then explodes into a spritely breakdown which is sure to serve as a midsummer anthem.

Like previous single “On Wires,” Jepsen is pregnant in the Aerin Moreno-directed music video for “After All” (she and husband Cole M.G.N., who she met three years prior during a studio session, welcomed their first child in March). Throughout the glowy video, she twirls around a golden-hued house, and later, M.G.N. makes an appearance in the visual at a glitzy fête.

Day and Night is Jepsen’s eighth studio album following the 2023 b-sides collection The Loveliest Time. On Sept. 27, Jepsen will play a special sunset set at New York City’s All Things Go Festival, marking her first live performance of the year.

The Canadian pop star’s first double album features 24 tracks, with each LP comprising 12 songs corresponding to the Day and Night theme. The musician worked on the double LP with collaborators and friends, including Tavish Crowe, Shearer, Cyphert, and M.G.N.. The track list has yet to be announced.

Jepsen began dropping hints of a new album in June. Keeping with the Day and Night theme, her official website played snippets of two different instrumentals (for 12 hours each) on June 1; one of the tracks being “After All.” Later, she began posting postcard-like images twice a day to her social media accounts on June 11, captioned by a lyric, location, and timestamp.

While celebrating the 10-year anniversary of her beloved album Emotion last summer, the Canadian pop star was announced as a co-writer of the stage musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You with Lena Dunham signed on to co-write the book.
