J-pop duo YOASOBI are coming to Overwatch for a new limited-time event.
Starting today (June 30) and running until July 20, players of first-person hero shooter Overwatch can get their hands on a number of cosmetics inspired by the music of YOASOBI.
“We couldn’t work with YOASOBI without introducing some exciting new looks into the game,” reads a press release from game developers Activision Blizzard. “Overwatch x YOASOBI introduces six legendary hero skins, each loaded with stunning visual effects and striking artistic details. Neon colours and hard-light designs swirl around some of your favourite heroes, accented by bold kanji-inspired motifs that celebrate their spirit. These new cosmetics feature enhanced ambient VFX, while dance emotes include official music and choreography provided through the collaboration.”
The event will take Overwatch heroes Kiriko, Genji and Hanzo “through the Shimada lore, shape the battlefield through distance, loss, and the long road back,” continues the press release. “Told from Kiriko’s perspective, this collab explores what it means to grow apart, hold on, and find your way through years of conflict. Through YOASOBI’s music based on the new short story, fully animated music video, collectible cosmetics, and map updates, you’ll confront the past and the ties your heroes can’t leave behind.”
To celebrate the collab, Juno Records have teamed up with YOASOBI to release a special ‘The Book Of (Overwatch Edition)’ vinyl. “Commissioned by game studio Blizzard, YOASOBI’s latest work ties directly to the new Overwatch game map, and is sung from the POV of its characters Genji, Hanzo and Kiriko,” explains a product listing.
“If you’ll excuse me saying this – I think we are the ultimate J-pop unit,” Ayase told NME as part of a The Cover feature. “We don’t approach music as if we have a main genre. We do many genres, and face many challenges in every song. Ikura sings in many ways too, just like how I write different kinds of songs. When I make a track and Ikura sings over it, that itself defines YOASOBI’s style.”
