The deceased body of a newborn was discovered in the toilets of a Michigan music festival, with an investigation now underway.

The infant’s body was found in a portable camp ground toilets at the Electric Forest festival campgrounds in Rothbury. An employee of the restroom vending company made the upsetting discovery while conducting routine maintenance, Michigan State Police have said (per CBS News).

The four-day music festival – pictured above in 2014 – was sold out for this year’s edition and featured dozens of DJ and EDM acts, including The String Cheese Incident, Excision, Chris Lake, Illenium, Kaskade, GRiZ, and more.

The sold-out event began on Thursday and wrapped on Sunday night (June 28). Organisers have since taken to social media to address the “Forest Family” in the wake of the incident, writing: “It causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you. @michstatepolice continues to investigate this tragic event if you can assist in any way.

“HQ is heartbroken and knows that our Forest Family is as well.”

The police force also took to social media to implore fans to contact them with information, advising them to visit a tip page if they saw anything unusual while at the festival. Any festivalgoers with information are being asked to contact Michigan State Police here.

“The Michigan State Police continue to investigate the discovery of a deceased neonate found Sunday morning in the camping area at the Electric Forest Festival,” they wrote on X.

“Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance. If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward.”

They concluded by saying that they appreciated the public’s cooperation, and went on to ask that “people avoid speculation on social media out of respect for the investigation and those affected”.

This is a developing story.
