Taylor Swift shares warm and nostalgic ‘Toy Story 5’ single ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’

Taylor Swift has shared ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’, the new song she has written for the soundtrack of Disney/Pixar movie Toy Story 5.

The song, released today (Friday June 5), was written and produced by Swift and regular collaborator Jack Antonoff, with the lyrics coming from the perspective of Jessie, the cowgirl toy who has been part of the franchise since Toy Story 2.

The Grammy-winning artist goes back to the country sound that made her name, singing a song with themes of love and reunion: “I watched you drive around the bend for/ What I thought would be the last time I saw my friend/But love has ways of bringing things back to life”.

The track is out today, and can be heard below. Alternatively, the song can be found on various platforms here. Pre-orders are also available via Taylor Swift’s website for three special CD editions that feature the version of the song that appears in the film, an acoustic version, and a piano version.

On X (formerly Twitter), Swift discussed her personal connection with the beloved animated movies.

“I’ve always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who I’ve adored since I was a five year old kid watching the first Toy Story movie,” she wrote. “I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?”

She added a video of herself as a child dressed as Jessie, writing: “Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time.

“Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once. And being a @toystory kid from the age of five til now… is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond.”

Rumours about Swift’s involvement circulated when billboards began appearing with the initials “T.S.” in the Toy Story font, before the artist herself confirmed the collaboration on June 1.

Toy Story 5 is released in cinemas on June 19, and follows the gang of toys as they contend with a new competitor for their human Bonnie’s attention: a tablet computer named Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee).

In other news, Taylor Swift recently praised Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney, saying that she was “never not inspired” by the great.
