Chappell Roan addresses security incident after Jorginho criticism: “You did not deserve that”

Chappell Roan has apologised to the wife and daughter of footballer Jorginho after he shared a “very upsetting” story of an interaction with the singer’s security.

On Saturday (March 21), the former Chelsea and Arsenal player shared a lengthy post on his Instagram Stories, detailing an incident in which his 11-year-old daughter was dealt with by Roan’s security in a “completely disproportionate” manner, leaving the girl in tears.

His wife Catherine Harding and daughter, whose biological father is Jude Law, were staying at a São Paulo hotel while attending Lollapalooza Brazil, which Roan headlined on Saturday night. As Jorginho described it, his daughter recognised Roan at breakfast and walked past her table “to confirm it was her”.

He went on to say that “a large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and daughter, saying that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.”

“It’s sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans,” he continued. “At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this. I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.”

He tagged Roan’s Instagram account at the end of his post, concluding, “WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”

Now, Roan has issued a personal response to the allegations on her own Instagram Stories. In a video apparently filmed in her hotel bed, she began: “I’m just gonna tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard who is not my personal security.”

“I didn’t even see. I didn’t even see a woman and a child. Like, I did not,” she continued. “No-one came up to me. No-one bothered me. Like, I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well.”

“I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. I did not. They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions, when they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken.”

Roan concluded: “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. Like, that is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”

After Jorginho’s post, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro banned Roan from one of the city’s largest music events, Todo Mundo no Rio, while offering an invitation to the daughter to attend the upcoming edition as an honoured guest.

The incident follows Roan’s now-viral encounter with hordes of paparazzi in Paris, in which the pop star said she felt “disregarded as a human” and turned the tables by filming them, with that incident far from the only time that the former NME Cover star has called out intrusive behaviour from fans and paparazzi.

Back in 2024, she divided opinions when she compared fame to “an abusive ex-husband” and vented about the normalisation of extreme fan behaviour, including “stalking, talking shit online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public.”

Prior to that, she had taken to TikTok to share her thoughts on “weird” and “creepy” followers, calling out the “predatory behaviour” of so-called “superfans” that includes “nonconsensual physical and social interactions”, and also hit back at photographers who yelled at her on the VMAs red carpet.

Her statements have since been applauded by celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, Rachel Zegler, and Daniel Craig, the latter saying he admires “the guts to say those things”. Olivia Rodrigo also revealed that Roan has been a key support figure in helping her deal with an “overwhelming” entertainment industry.
